Kushti Bok-(good luck or good fortune)
...is a traditional salutation by Rommani People (UK dialect). Our home a 74 VW Kombi was named Kushti Bok by her creator artist John Hill (Blue Sky Gallery)and was converted to be a modern day working vardo. Since we are working Itinerant Artisans we thought our home name would be appropriate as our business name .
As Itinerant Artisans
We travel up and down the East Coast of Australia, not far from the agricultural show circuit and seasonal festivals & fairs where you will find us.
Culturally we identify as Nomadic Australians my name is Gypsy not my cultural identity. When young I was told by my mother to explain my dark complexion on a 'Gypsy' heritage. My mother was told likewise that my grandmother was adopted from 'Gypsies'. When studying human rights at university; I learnt that this was a common lie told to Stolen Generation descendants- to avoid racial discrimination. In my youth Aboriginal Australians received harsher discrimination than immigrant Rommani or Travelers who were welcomed for their skills. Now we have legislation that supposedly does away with racial discrimination. Unfortunately this does not assist us live a nomadic lifestyle that is in the blood.
Many people we meet think our lifestyle as travelers is romantic, it is far from it, and comes with a lot of issues. Generally we are welcomed by every community in the country we visit. People love to see us still plodding along in our circuit from town to town between Hobart in Tasmania and Cairns in Queensland or Darwin in NT. Things have changed in recent years that are making our way of life more difficult than when I was first a traveler in my youth.
Local Governments with new bi-laws are causing us much grief. In the past we have always been able to trade from our home as it sits on common ground or similar public lands. We make much of what we sell as we go. We sit outside our home on most days ripping rags, hand sewing, gluing, and soldering- all sorts of tasks to make our wares. We sell formally when we set out our stall at venues. (See calendar for upcoming venues)
When approached by the public we will not reject offers for sales and an income- this is our right as a legal trading entity; we do not hawk our wares nor knock on doors; since laws prohibited this avenue for trade. So here we are keeping up with the times and making a web site so our wares may be purchased by those who appreciate our work and would like to keep us on the road. We need your help. Please shop with us and you will be helping us live our simple lives and you will receive unique wares for yourself or as a gift for friends and family.
